KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians, including civil servants, are encouraged to get after-office or weekend jobs to cope with the rising cost of food and fuel.
The move is to stop people from falling from the middle to poor-income bracket, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Senator Tan Sri Amirsham A. Aziz.
"If we don't do anything, more people will fall into the poor income group."
He said the government would get the ball rolling by asking the Public Service Department to speed up the approval process for civil servants to get part-time jobs.
At present, he said civil servants needed approval from their heads of department to work after office hours.
"As long as it doesn't get in the way of their productivity, I encourage Malaysians to work harder to reduce the high cost of living we are experiencing now."
