KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 — Police briefly detained five opposition activists who brought dozens of children outside Istana Negara today to protest a law that allows detention without trial.
The children carried teddy bears as a symbolic gesture to present to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to plead for the release of their fathers held under the Internal Security Act that enables suspects regarded as national security threats to be imprisoned indefinitely without trial.
S. Jayathas, a spokesman for the so-called "Father's Day" protest, said police detained five adult demonstrators, including three PKR MPs — Zuraida Kamaruddin (Ampang), R. Sivarasa (Subang) and S. Manickavasagam (Kapar) — for holding a public rally without obtaining approval.
